The series ran for 29 chapters from the 2007 #1[[1]](#cite_note-chapter1jumpsource-1)[[2]](#cite_note-chapter1mandarakesource-2) through #32[[3]](#cite_note-chapter29mandarakesource-3) issues of [Shueisha](/wiki/Shueisha)'s *Weekly Shōnen Jump* magazine. *Ral Ω Grad* was collected into four *tankōbon* throughout 2007, and received a digital release in the same format in 2017.[[4]](#cite_note-shueishafullbooklisting-4) [Viz](/wiki/edit/Viz?redlink=1) released an English translation of the same four-volume collection across 2008-2009 under its "Shonen Jump Advanced" sub-label, eschewing the "Blue Dragon" naming directly in its title.[[5]](#cite_note-vizfullbooklisting-5) While the original *Blue Dragon* video game featured character designs by [Akira Toriyama](/wiki/Akira_Toriyama), *Ral Ω Grad* largely skews more toward Obata's traditional illustration style. # Plot During a bloody war, a child is born at the cost of his mother's life. From this baby comes forth a huge and powerful dragon born of shadow that lays waste to the landscape. A quick-thinking knight locks the baby in a cage of darkness, where he grows to be a young man, knowing only the kindness of his young female tutor. Following *Ral Ω Grad*, Obata continued their success with *Bakuman* in 2008, once again in collaboration with Tsugumi Ōba. No significant information about or profiles exist for writer [Tsuneo Takano](/wiki/edit/Tsuneo_Takano?redlink=1), leading to speculation about the name possibly being a pseudonym for another writer.[[b]](#cite_note-7) The author comments and next-issue-preview page from the 2006 $52 issue of [Shueisha](/wiki/Shueisha)'s *Weekly Shōnen Jump* magazine included a small blurb promoting the upcoming serialization for *Ral Ω Grad* noting both its author's and illustrator's names, as well as the release date for the issue. *Ral Ω Grad* ran for 29 chapters from the 2007 #1 (where it debuted with a two-page vertical color title page spread) through #32 issues of *Weekly Shōnen Jump*, with absences in the **(TBD)** issues. # Releases Following an original four-volume *tankōbon* release from 2007, a corresponding/equivalent digital version of *Ral Ω Grad* was released in 2017. *Ral Ω Grad* received a full English translation and release based on this *tankōbon* edition, both in physical and digital forms, from [Viz](/wiki/edit/Viz?redlink=1) over the course of 2008-2009.
