Sometimes it’s funny marketing materials, sometimes it’s name spelling curiosities, and sometimes it might just be a neat little trinket we still have kicking around all these decades later. --- We’ve been sharing a lot about old action figures lately, and several of the articles turned into much larger pieces than originally intended… so for this week’s entry, I wanted something a little easier! When I’m lost for ideas, I sit back and just look around the room to see what grabs my attention. A certain little guy immediately caught my eye, and I knew what had to be done. As the de facto mascot of Temple O’ Trunks, “Bubba Trunks” is something (some*one*?) that should be familiar to longtime visitors and comrades. I joke often about how sometimes I don’t know which figures or tapes are originally mine or Meri’s, but in the case of Bubba, there’s no question about it. So I sent my own wife some Q&As via email and this is what I got back. > Who or what is Bubba Trunks? > > Bubba Trunks is a “super deformed”/chibi-style plastic piggy bank. At least, that’s what he WANTS you to think. He’s more, so much more than that. He’s an actor, stuntman, traveler — a real renaissance man, a man of the people! Why he’s named Bubba Trunks, I cannot say. I think I just have a habit of calling chonky things “bubba.” > > Where and when did you get him? > > I got him from a local New Jersey flea market (which, regrettably, no longer exists) from a vendor that sold bootleg anime everything — fansubs, knock-off posters, figures, you name it. Heaven on earth, truly, especially for a newly-minted anime fan looking to get my hands on any Trunks merch I could find. I released him from his bootleg dungeon in the late 90s, but I don’t remember if Temple O’ Trunks predated my adopting him. > > What is he so upset about? > > I think he’s a bit self-conscious about his height. I mean, have you met his dad? Actually, maybe he’s just upset about Vegeta, PERIOD. > > What’s your favorite memory of him being used in any Feature Films? > > There was a Feature Film that put a DBZ-spin on popular TV commercials from the late 90s. A certain scene required Bubba Trunks look super dramatic; he really had to sell it. But since he has a perpetual grimace on his face, I needed to experiment with filming him from different, increasingly extreme angles and sides (fun fact: even though the Feature Films used still images to narrate the story, they were all screencaps from a video-recorded action figure arrangement session. That approach was much easier than the very first Feature Film, which used an honest to goodness film camera. Towards the end of the Feature Films’ lifespan, I graduated to a digital camera). In any case, the angles cracked me up nonstop while filming the shot I wanted, which confirmed I was on the right path. My other favorite memory is Bubba Trunks playing the part of a massive ladies’ man in the early stories. It’s the opposite of how Trunks actually behaves in the series, so I’m all about that opposition of character traits. > > > > Why do you think people still remember and ask about him to this day? > > What’s not to love? He’s got a goofy name, got into stupid adventures, and his overall design as a piggy bank is just so ludicrous that he’s hard to forget. I absolutely thought of him as Temple O’ Trunks‘ mascot. I think fans of the site latched on to that designation and embraced the silliness with open arms. Bubba Trunks simply embodied Temple O’ Trunks‘ mission statement of providing a lighthearted good time! Even with all the crazy-spectacular, mega-articulated figures that come and go… there will always be a place for Bubba.
